It progresses by studying the response of single-degree-of-freedom systems to more complex and irregular types of loading, such as pulse and arbitrary excitations. This builds the foundation to understand the response to more realistic types of loading, such as explosions, earthquakes, and wind.Course overviewIn this lecture we are going to learn first the definition of the impulse, using which we are going to learn how a structure response to an impulse. Subsequently, we are going to learn that an arbitrarily varying force can be assumed to be a sequence of infinitesimally short impulses, and we are going to derive Duhamel's integral, using which we can evaluate the response of the structure.Subsequently, we are going to apply Duhamel's integral to study the response to various types of loading, such as a step force, a linearly increasing force, and a force with finite rise time. We are also going to study the response to a rectangular pulse, and to a half-cycle sine pulse.Next, we are going to learn that the response is affected by the pulse shape when the normalized pulse duration is long, whereas when the normalized pulse duration is short the response depends primarily on the impulse magnitude. We are also going to examine the effect of the damping ratio on the response. Lastly, we are going to prove that the formulation can be used for both the case that a force is applied directly on the structure, and when the excitation is caused by the ground motion.This lecture will teach you the necessary material needed to evaluate the response of structures to pulse loads, such as explosions and collisions, and to arbitrarily varying loads, such as earthquakes, wind and vehicle loads.
